Floyd Donald Henry, known by friends as "Don," 80, died peacefully at home in Carlsbad, CA, on Saturday, March 6, 2010. He was surrounded by family after a brief struggle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by son, Blake Henry and sister, Dolly Henry Williamson.

Don is survived by wife, MaryLou (Carlsbad, CA); children, Mark Henry (and Vicki Henry, Venice, FL), Kathleen Peterson (Blue Jay, CA), Bruce Henry (Ypsilanti, MI), Molly Henry (and Don Fisher, Carlsbad, CA); grandchildren, Joe Henry (Venice, FL), Ben Mazur (and Leah Beck, San Bernardino, CA), Amanda Gonzales (Monroe, MI), Morgan Henry-Rivera (Carlsbad, CA); great-grandson, Logan Gonzales (Monroe, MI).

Don was born May, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, son of Zelma Wright Henry and Floyd W. Henry and raised in Toledo, Ohio.

Don married MaryLou Peterson (of Perrysburg, Ohio) in May, 1951.

He was a Sergeant First Class in the Army during the Korean War.

Don graduated from Toledo University with a Bachelor's degree and became an industrial engineer. He moved to Monroe, MI, where he and MaryLou raised five children.

Don worked for Jeep Corporation for 20 years before retiring.

He spent several years traveling and managing a resort property before settling in Carlsbad, CA.

Don was a charter member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at T.U., an avid bowler who founded Monroe's first Junior Bowling League, and a Cub Scout leader. He served as Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe.

As a retiree, Don was a member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Carlsbad; he enjoyed participating in Pilgrim's World AIDS Day activities and driving the parade contingent for Gay Pride.

Don was a regular volunteer at Interfaith Community Services and a 15-year volunteer for Fraternity House and Michaelle House, local homes for those with HIV/AIDS.

Don will be remembered as a steadfast, stoic man with a gentle and kind heart. He was a mechanical genius who took pleasure in building things and solving practical problems. He was always available to lend a helping hand and he will be missed by many.

Memorial services were held March 20th in Carlsbad, CA. Inurnment will be on Friday, July 16th, 2010, at 2:00 pm at Toledo Memorial Park, Sylvania, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fraternity House, Inc. (20702 Elfin Forest Road, Escondido, CA 92029).
