DR. SAMUEL BARTO
Samuel Barto, A veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars, who was a resident of Monroeville for a number of years, died last Friday at his home near Pleasant Mills in Adams County. Uncle Sam was well known hereabouts and was a genial, sociable old gentleman having an inexhaustible fund of interesting tales and anecdotes concerning incidents of his long active life.

The funeral of Samuel H. Barto, a former well-known resident of Monroeville, and who moved from here a few months ago, to a farm he purchased near Pleasant Mills, in Adams Co., was held from his late residence, on Sunday, March 26th, 1899, at Pleasant Mills, the services being conducted by Rev. D. J. Schneck, there being a large concourse of relatives and friends present. The deceased was born in Lycoming county, PA., the 17th day of August, 1821 and died March 24th , 1899, at the age of 77 years 7 months and 7 days. He was a soldier in the Mexican war, and also the war of 1861 to '65, being a private in Company F, 104th Volunteer Infantry. He was a member of Wm. H. Link Post, No 301, G.A.R., of Monroeville. He professed faith in Christ and was a member of the Lutheran Church for years, but of recent years a member of the Presbyterian Church at Hoagland, and while he did not frequently attend divine services his actions and mode of living in his declining years showed to the world that he remained a steadfast believer in Christ to the end. He was twice married, his first companion being Miss Majdalena Hummel, to whom he was united in the county and state of his boyhood days, to which union were born seven children. But as was the will of God, this companion and two children were summoned home many years ago, leaving five surviving to mourn the departure of a dear father, as follows: Daniel Barto of Arcola, Ind., Milton Barto of Hoagland, Ind., Simeon Barto of Vandalia, Mich., Mrs. Katherine Magner of Monroeville, and Mrs. Eliza Emenhiser of Allen Co. On the 1st day of March 1871 he accepted as his second companion in life, a widow Mrs. Catherine McCurdy, of Allen County, Ind., and to them were born three children, two of whom survive the deceased father to mourn with the above named, the mother and one child having passed over to join the silent spirits. With the children, the departed aged father leaves three brothers, two sisters, nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many friends to mourn their loss. Every child was present at the funeral. When a citizen among, Dr. Barto,as converse with as he was a royal entertainer and can truthfully be termed as a genuine type of "Peter Pender," to children, as they would gather around him in groups wherever he would be when uptown, as they were sure to hear an interesting or amusing story. He will not only be missed by his family but every community in which he has resided.
