Three Generations of Civil Engineers

James Smith Haring was a Civil Engineer. He attended Carnegie Tech. There were three generations of Civil Engineers in this family. He was well published in several engineering journals. He lost his first wife in child birth giving birth to my grandfather, James Smith Haring III. James Smith Haring Jr. did remarry ten years after her death to a woman fifteen years younger than himself. The woman he married from his first marriage, Elizabeth Barrow Wylde, was a direct line from Viscount Robert Tracy II as well from Members of Parliament, the Wylde family from Worcester and the Barrow family from the Manor in Wedmore, England. He was a member of the Holland Society of New York.

Received: 14 October 2014 from a researcher of family land sold. Real Estate transactions of James Smith Haring Sr.

"Came across this from 3 years ago and thought I'd pass it on"

The JSH who was married to Rachel often bought property from the 1840's through 1872, most noticeably 120 acres on March 38, 1872 from Catherine Blauvelt in Orangetown. I never saw a block of property of that size being sold.
Then it is noted that James S. Haring, Jr. bought Lot 15, block 3, in the Tappan cemetery from the Tappan DRC, on June 18, 1872, and after that date JSH didn't buy any more property. His father died in 1878. He decided to purchase a family burial plot in Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill New York. On March 10, 1891 James Smith Haring, Jr. sold a half plot in the Tappan cemetery to a J. Eckerson Demarest.

"SHE PUTS A BURGLAR TO FLIGHT"

Maggie Lyons First Puts on Trousers and Then Uses a Revolver.

Nyack, July 30---Maggie Lyons, a fine-looking young girl employed in the household of Corporation Engineer and Surveyor James S. Haring of this place, is a heroine upon whom the people of Nyack have been showering praises all day.

In the absence of Mr. Haring and family Maggie confronted a negro burglar, put him to flight with a revolver, and saved a large quantity of valuable which he intended on carrying off.

She was awakened at 4 o'clock this morning by a slight noise in her room, and looking up, she saw a negro ransacking the bureau. Maggie lay perfectly quiet, and the negro went into another room, gathered up some clothing, and then entered the room where Mr. Haring's aged mother slept.

Then Maggie jumped up, slipped on a pair of Mr. Haring's trousers, so as to appear like a man, took a revolver from under her pillow, and confronted the negro. "What do you want" asked the girl.

The negro replied with curses and then darted down stairs. Maggie rushed after him, and as he reached the foot of the stairs, she fired a shot which just grazed his head and smashed a small mirror all to pieces. The negro dropped the bundle of clothes which he had been carrying and ran through a hall to the back door of the dining room, which he had opened before he went upstairs. Maggie chased him, and as he jumped out on the lawn she fired another shot, but without effect.

Neighbors were summoned, but no trace of the burglar could be found.

On looking around the dining room Maggie found a large package of silver and other valuables which the man had done up to carry away.

Mr. Haring arrived home today and made the girl a liberal present for her bravery.
