Killed In Action on mission over France
to bomb the German V-1 and V-2 rocket sites.
Near Cherbourg, hit by flak moments after
'bombs away.' Wing and engine afire, went
into spin and then a dive. The aircraft then
exploded. Only the top turret gunner survived
when he was blown out by the explosion.
The B-17 crashed at Théville, France, killing
nine crew aboard:
1st Lt. Richard L Mann, Pilot
2nd Lt. McKinnon Cameron, Bombardier
2nd Lt. John E. Vaughan, Co-Pilot
SSgt. Walter E Hermenau, Right Waist Gunner
SSgt. Mark I Overstreet, Tail Gunner
