Son of the late Perry Thomas Owens and Maggie Lynne Baker, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Beulah Craft Owens, and two brothers, Erick Owens and Perry Thomas "Tommy" Owens, Jr. He was survived by his wife, Nan Vanderford Owens; a daughter, Lynn Owens Helmer (Harry); a son, Stephen Thomas Owens (Marilyn; a step-daughter, Karen Taylor Elliott (David); a step-son, Lee Howard Taylor; six grandchildren; one step-grandson; and an extended family of relatives. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and he attended First Christian Church. He was a member of the Wilson Elks Lodge. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman. His funeral was held April 15, 2010, with The Rev. Gene Tyson officiating. WWII, enlistment date, March 16, 1946, Fort Bragg, NC.
