John Preston Ross' father was Johnson Ross, who died 31 Mar 1895 per his obituary in "The Arkansas Methodist". The date on Johnson's stone is incorrect.

1870 U.S. Census, Dallas Post Office, Sulphur Springs Township, Polk (Howard not formed until 1873.), Arkansas, Page 52, Enumerated 20 July by John F Lane, Ass't Marshal: John F [sic] Ross, age 16, white male, birth about 1854 in Louisiana, attended school within the year, can read and write, living in household of Johnson Ross (48), with Mary A (38), William P (15), Huey R (13), James Mc (10), Mary J (6), Frances (3) and Henry J (1). (Families enumerated before and after John Ross are Ralls, Ashby, and Walden.)

On June 1, 1900, John T. [sic] Ross (45), farmer, lived in Sulphur Springs Township, Howard, Arkansas with his wife Martha (45), and children Edgar A. (19), Mary (15), Fannie (12), Booker (11), and Henry C. (4).
