Donald Lee Byington passed away unexpectedly on December 31, 2009, at his home in San Diego, California. He was born on July 2, 1941, in Hailey, Idaho. He served his country for 26 years in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Storekeeper and retired as a Senior Chief. Highlights of his naval career include serving in Vietnam and being stationed on the USS Midway. After retiring from active duty in 1988, he worked for the Civil Service at NAS North Island, Aviation Support Department - Rotatable Pool for 21 years where he was a Supervisor. He is survived by his brother, Bob, of Tacoma, Washington; his wife, Isabelita; and his sons, Lamberto and Ricky of San Diego. Being very intelligent, Don had a passion for reading books. His favorite authors included Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, Stephen Coonts, H. Jay Riker, and Dale Brown, among others. If Don wasn't reading, he could be found diligently working on the daily crossword puzzle in the San Diego Union-Tribune. He completed them correctly and accurately nearly every day. Don was also a huge sports fan of the San Diego Padres as well as the Chargers. He loved talking sports and would debate anyone when it came to his favorite San Diego teams. Don was a loving husband, father, and friend who gave generously to his family and friends. He expected nothing in return. He had a tough exterior, but inside he was a teddy bear with a heart of gold. He positively affected anyone who crossed his path, brightening their day with kindness and jokes. Don will be missed and remembered by all those who knew and loved him.
