History
George Washington Conover (1822-1891) and Margaret Dixon Shaw Conover (1825-1881) came to Texas in 1876 or 1877 from Illinois with six family members in a covered wagon pulled by oxen. The family included Tylee Marvin Conover (30) & Susanna Huff Conover (22), Benjamin Franklin Conover (18), Mary Allura Conover (15), William Oscar Conover (12) and Freddie N. Conover (7). The decision to leave a well established life in Illinois and move to Texas leaving behind numerous family and friends must have been really difficult. George lost his oldest son, Marshall Reeder Conover in 1863 at nineteen years of age and lost his daughter Josephine Conover in 1875 at the age of 27. Beside Josephine’s grave is an infant’s grave, Josie Conover (1875-1876). Marshall, Josephine and Tylee were from George’s first marriage to Eliza Jane Hunt (1821-1855) whom George lost after only twelve years of marriage. It was nearly a year later that George married Margaret Dixon Shaw on July 1, 1856 while living in Shelby County, Ohio.
