Edwin R. Ailey joined the Oklahoma National Guard 45th Division (Thunderbirds), 189th Field Artillery at Roff, Ok in 1933. From that time until sept. 16, 1940, which was the date the Division was activated for federal service and brought up to war-time strength. The Division went to Ft. Sill, Ok, then to Camp Barkeley, TX. Cadred out of the 189th F.A. to the 645th Tank Destroyer Bn . at Camp Barkeley. Cadred out of the 645th Tank Destroyer Bn. To the 610th Tank Destroyer Bn. In April 1942 at Camp Barkeley, TX; went to Camp Bowie, TX in March 1943, to Camp Atterbury, IN in June 1943 to R.O.E at Camp Kilmer, NJ in March 1944.
Embarked on June 2, 1944 for England and later France and Germany. After a short occupation time he accumulated points for length of service and returned by air to the U.S. and was discharged as a Sergeant in July 1945, just short of five years of service.
Awarded the Bronze Star Medal with V Device, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five battle stars, WW II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
