Humble man, this man, my grandfather. He was of slight build, very tanned and wrinkled. He smoked Lucky Strike cigarettes, when he bought them. Otherwise, he rolled his own. He always wore a hat and he was soft spoken. I cannot remember him smiling or laughing. I remember him coming to our house on 17th Street and picking me up in his car and taking me to the picture shows...as he called them. We would go to the Carnation Ice Cream parlor afterwards.
