Jack was a farmer

Hinton Daily News, Hinton, West Virginia
Thursday, August 27, 1903, page 1
L J Burdette, well known in Hinton where he has several relatives was drowned near his home at Wolf Creek and was found floating yesterday. We are indebted to the Alderson Advertiser for the following:
At about 5 o'clock yesterday evening the body of L J Burdette commonly known as "Jack" Burdette, who lived opposite the mouth of Wolf Creek, was found floating in the river about a half mile below his home by Geo Reynolds, who was fishing there.
Tuesday Mr Burdette took some ladies across the river in a skiff so that they might go to Hinton on No 13 which is due there at 12:07. He took a bucket with him to take back some sulphur water from the Spring there. Later on, his boat was found loose in the river, but his wife felt no alarm, thinking that he had suddenly changed his mind and gone on to Hinton with the ladies. Nothing more was seen or heard of him until late yesterday evening when his body was found as above stated.
The body was found floating, something very unusual for being in the water so short a time.
Up to the hour of going to press (late Wednesday night) the body had not been removed from the water pending an inquest by Squire Gregory, who has been sent for.
Mr Burdette leaves a wife and one child, Mrs W C Eades, of North Alderson.
