Lawrence John Magner was the son
of William Grover and Charlotte
"Lottie" Mae Schulte Magner.
He was the brother of Wilma
(Floyd) Wines and Virgil Adam.
He was the grandson of:
Phillip and Magdaline Seipker
Schulte of Auburn, Iowa and
John Henry and Catherine L.
Barto Magner of Monroeville,
Indiana.
He married Leona E. Nichols of
Concord, Dixon, Nebraska on
December 30, 1940, at Wall Lake,
Iowa. They lived at Auburn and
Sac City the first years of their
marriage and then Lake City. He
was raised on a farm during the
horse drawn era, picking corn and
milking cows by hand. He worked for
several farmers around Sac and
Calhoun Counties; he rented a farm
near Auburn for a few years before
retiring to Lake City. He worked
for Ben Hart doing farm tiling, and
also at the Joyce's lumber yard. He
mowed lawns and shoveled snow for
friends and neighbors. He and Leona
enjoyed fishing at Lake View or the
Raccoon River. Lawrence and Leona
went to dances, especially the
Dick Danstrom band, and playing cards
with friends and relatives. He enjoyed
watching wrestling, Western movies and
the Lawrence Welk show on T.V. In later
years, they enjoyed going to the
Albert City Thresherman's Show. He
had a pair of draft horses that he
had farmed with for years and it
brought back many memories to see
the threshing machines and the old
way of farming. Lawrence was a
historian of sorts. He could regale
you with stories of living before the
advent of electricity, running water,
tractors and automobiles.
Lawrence and Leona had three children:
Phyllis (Ray) Higgins, Raymond and
Robert. They adopted Elaine E. Magner,
a niece, when she was a small child.
