The Farlows
Nathan Farlow and his wife Ruth Carter Farlow 1742 - 1837 Father and Mother of all North Carolina Farlows. Patriots and philanthropists. Members of the Society of Friends because they believe slavery and war unchristian. Nathan and Ruth came from Chester County, Pennsylvania to North Carolina about 1758, in company with relatives and friends, among whom were Nathan's grandfather, John Farlow, his parents Michael and Mary White Farlow, and two brothers, George and William. George and William, with their families moved to Indiana. Two of Ruth's sisters, Mary who married Stephen Harlan, and Edith who married Enoch Harlan with their families came also.
Stephen and Enoch Harlan were sons of William and Mary Farlow Harlan. Margaret was Michael's sister. Stephen had a daughter, Edith, who married William Hill, they had a daughter Ann who married Samuel Farlow, son of Isaac, son of Nathan.

Ancestors of Nathan and Ruth
The Farlows came from England and the Carters from Ireland. Two brothers known as immigrant Farlows, came to America with the English settlers. Thomas, one of these, in 1623, was a member of the House of Burgesses. From the information in hand this Thomas is the first American ancestor of Nathan. His line is as follows: Thomas, John, Thomas, John, Michael.
Ruth Carter was the daughter of Nathanial and Nancy Ann (Pherson) Carter.

4. Joseph Farlow (Oct 27, 1771 Randolph Co., NC - July 14, 1845 Paoli, Orange Co., IN). Married Ruth Lindley Oct 16, 1799. Beech Grove Cem/Orange Co., IN.
5. Enoch Farlow (Nov 14, 1773 - Oct 13, 1855). Married Lydia Montgomery.
6. Michael Farlow (May 6, 1776 - Oct 10, 1842). Married Hannah Newlin on June 12, 1799 Spring Meeting, Orange Co., NC.
7. Mary Farlow (Jan 17, 1778 - 1836). Married Isaac Spencer son of Benjamin Spencer.
8. Ruth Farlow (Feb 2, 1780 - Jan 8, 1847.
9. Elizabeth Farlow Sep 26, 1782 - unknown. Married John Spencer.
10. Nathan Farlow (Sep 4, 1784 - Mar 22, 1845. Married Peggy Spencer.
11. Hannah Farlow (Jul 8, 1787) Married Nathan Andrew.

Inscription

There is a loose stone leaning against the Farlow Monument in the year of 1999. "Ruth Farlow departed this life the 23 of the 12 mo 1837. Aged 95 years."
