US WAR VETERAN DIES, CLARRESHOLM
JOS H ABBEY SERVED IN CIVIL WAR
Another of the American Civil war veterans passed away here on Saturday in the person of Joseph H Abbey, a native of New York state and until recently a resident of the Western states. The late Mr Abbey was born in New York State Sep 23 1839, and when the civil war broke out he enlisted with the Fourth Michigan Cavalry, and served for four years and six months, taking part in the famous Sherman march to the sea.
Some time ago the deceased came into this district to visit his daughters, Mrs George Lepard and Mrs Norman Lepard, and a few weeks ago he was taken ill and brought into the local hospital. where he succumbed to the infirmities of old age on Saturday morning.
The late Mr Abbey was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church and for many years occupied a place as a lay preacher in that church. The funeral service was held this afternoon at Bethel church, the pastor, Rev Geo Webber . conducting the service at the church and also at the Claresholm cemetery.
Besides the two daughters mentioned above, one son survives. Ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren also survive.
