Lottie Mae Schulte Magner was the
daughter of Philip and Magdaline
Schulte of Auburn, Iowa.
She was the sister of:
Mary Angeline (John F. Thelan),
George, Frank, Phillip Jr.,
Joseph, Ella (John Gute),
Ludwig M., and Anthony J. (Tony).
On November 7, 1911, Charlotte (Lottie)
Schulte married William Grover Magner
in the presence of Edward Hein and
Caroline Thieden, at Auburn, Iowa.
Bill and Lottie were the parents of
three children;
Lawrence John, Wilma (Floyd Wines),and
Virgil Adam
They lived with her parents for a few years,
on Ash St., in Auburn, Iowa. Bill worked at the
tile plant east of town, then started farming
near Auburn, then Glidden and later, Lake
View. Lottie would receive a shipment of baby
chicks each spring to raise. She sold eggs and
cream in town each week for grocery money.
They retired to 1606 Main Street, Sac City, in
the early 1950's. They both worked at the
sweet corn factory during harvest time. Lottie
loved flowers; there were more flower beds
than lawn. She enjoyed gardening, playing
cards, crocheting doiles, and listening to her
afternoon radio program, "Days of Our Lives".
She would not have a T.V. or telephone in her
home.
She could speak in German. Whenever they
would visit with Anna and Carl Hess from Wall
Lake, the women talked in German. At the
grandchildren's birthday parties she would
sing "Happy Birthday" in German. Back then,
women wore dresses and hats. She would
always take something, either from the
garden, a jar of canned goods or a covered
dish when she went to visit. Lottie believed
in prayer, confession, no meat on Fridays,
and going to church on Sunday morning.
A very simple life, but my grandparents
were happy with what they had.
