Marion, N.C. -J. Hunter Ballew of Chapel Hill died on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at UNC Memorial Hospital.

Born in Nebo, Dr. Ballew began his education at Nebo School, one of just 12 graduates in his senior class.

He joined the Navy, achieving the rank of lieutenant after attending OCS in Monterey, Calif. He specialized in meteorology and spent two years stationed at the U.S. Naval Base near Yokosuka, Japan.

A lifelong teacher, Dr. Ballew taught high school in New Orleans and at Longwood College in Virginia before completing his Master's degree and PhD. at UNC.

He dedicated his professional life to education and learning by teaching mathematics in UNC's School of Education for 41 years, founding the University's Math-Science Center, and directing its Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program.

Dr. Ballew published a textbook, "Teaching Children Mathematics," and countless journal articles, but his true passion was inspiring future teachers. He will be remembered for his incredible kindness, modesty, even-temper and wonderful, corny sense of humor. Hunter was truly a gentleman and a gentle man.

He was predeceased by his parents, William Jay Ballew and Alice Belle Hunter Ballew, and three brothers, William, John and Robert Ballew.
