The following appeared in the Runge News, Newspaper and was probably written by the Owner and Editor, Mr Alfred B Schroeder. Although there are no records or copies of the orginal Newspaper, this write-up of the obituary was provided by Major Gerald H Sparks USAF Ret. of Runge, TX, a historian and genealogist who researched many of the Runge Families, and Runge Cemetery.
OBITUARY
Again the portals of heaven have been opened and a sweet angel of tender mercy sent down to earth to carry back to that glorious realm of joy and peace and love the immortal element of another one of God's Eternal Noblemen.
On Saturday, about One P.M. the sad message was flashed over the wires, that Isaac Thomas Butler had passed from darkness to light; had passed through that open door that separates time from eternity; the door through which no sorrow or suffering can pass; the door that leads to the highest pinnacle of divine joy.
The end came at the residence of Mr and Mrs Reavis B Hunter of Dallas, where he has spent the last several months of earthly existence; Mrs Hallie Hunter and Burnell Cochran Butler being his only children. He loved his children, and his children loved him, as evidenced by the tender, loving care that attended his illness.
The end symbolized a sweet and fitting benediction to a well spent life, for he quietly and peacefully fell into a restful and dreamless sleep, surrounded by his children, and all other loved ones who could be present; Then, God's finger touched him, and he awoke in heaven, in the presence of his Lord and Master, and all the angels, and loved ones who preceded him over there.
The name "Tom Butler" was a synonym for kindness, charity and benevolence, and in viewing the floral offerings, which were both gorgeous and profuse, it seemed that every one to whom he had been a benefactor; to whom he had spoken some kind and encouraging word, or performed some act of unexpected and unrequested kindness, had sent a fragrant bouquet as their silent message of appreciation, for his casket and mound rested indeed beneath a wilderness of flowers.
He was a loyal and public spirited ccitizen; a loving, thoughtful and indulgent father; a true and steadfast friend; and a faithful and consecrated Christian. What other mantle of honor and glory could rest on the shoulders of any man; And yet - he was all this and more.
He first saw the light of day, near Bastrop, Fayette County, Texas on August 11th, 1866. His parents moved to Rockport when he was about 5 years of age, and there he spent his early and only childhood, for when still in his teens, he obtained employment on the Cochran Ranch as a cowboy, where he worked for several years, after which he entered the building trade and constructed many of the first prominent buildings in Helena, Runge and Rockport. He erected Runge's first school building, where the present High School building stands.
On October 26th 1896 he married Mrs Phoebe Elizabeth Taylor, nee Willbern, and for twenty five years, their home was to all, a place of joy, happiness and unstinted hospitality. On October 25th 1920 Mrs Butler passed away. To that union, two children were born, Hallie Elizabeth and Burnell Cochran, both of whom survive. Also he is survived by four sisters, Mrs B J Terry, Mrs Hubbard Woodcock, Miss Eula Butler and Miss Dora Butler, all of Dallas, and one brother, Hugh L Butler of Runge, Texas.
He was a member of Runge Lodge #812, the San Antonio Consistory and Alzafar Shrine, and lived his Masonry day by day. An impressive service was conducted at the Christian Church by Brother Young and Brother Hightower, with a final short service at the grave.
Those from out of town attending were: Mr & Mrs N C Hoyt, Mr Geo D Jacob, Miss Ida Ficas, Mr Geo Bowen, all representing the Norris Lumber Co of Houston; also Mr & Mrs A E J Steves, Mr & Mrs Chas Eschenfelder and Mr Robert H Hughes of Houston. From Yorktown; Mr & Mrs King Roeder, Mr & Mrs W C Metz, Mr & Mrs Albert Kroege, Mr & Mrs Senicek, Mrs John Karlick; Mrs Nannie Busby of Weesatche; from Karnes City, Mr & Mrs Marvin Butler, Mr & Mrs Fred Anderson, Mr & Mrs T H Stewart; Mr & Mrs Lee Busby of San Antonio, and doubtless many others, who this writer failed to see.
Peace to his ashes; and may that peace, coupled with the sweet menories of his life, prove a comfort to the family always.
