J. I. (Ard) Thomas, 75, a life long resident of the Southeast Panhandle, died in St. Joseph's Hospital at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5. He had been in ill health for a number of months but entered the hospital only a week earlier. Since he retired from farming several years ago, he and Mrs. Thomas had lived in Wellington.
Born Jacob Ired Thomas on Sept. 9, 1891, he was the first white child born in Childress County north of Red River. He grew up in this area. On Jan. 18, 1916 he was married to Miss Emma Winter of Wellington and the couple this year celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas lived in the Cross Roads community from 1923 until 1946, and from then until 1962 their home was six miles south of Wellington. He retired in that year and since then had lived in Wellington. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Mr. Thomas participated in many community enterprises throughout the long period in which he was active.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, of Wellington; a son and three daughters: J.W. thomas of San Francisco, CA; Mrs. Truman Parrish (Lila Lee) of Sudan; Mrs. C. L. Blandford (June) of Amarillo; and Mrs. Carrol Tolleson (Virginia) of Clarendon. He and Mrs. Thomas also were rearing a granddaughter, Joye Hudspeth. Altogether there are 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Other survivors are a brother and two sisters: Frank Thomas of Wellington, Mrs. Essie Helvey of Dimmitt and Mrs. Bessie Scally of Oxnard, CA.
One daughter, Mrs. Ruby Hudspeth, preceded him in death.
