January 9, 1947

R.S. Montague, 69, veteran mail carrier of this county, died Tuesday evening, January 7, about 5:00 p.m., after a lengthy illness.

Provided by Angie Mitchell Martin

Mr. Montague had carried the mail on Route 3, Wellington, for 29 years. Several months ago he took a sick leave and later underwent an operation. He was moved to his home and was able to see and be with friends for a time, but during the last week his condition had grown worse.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Wellington at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, January 9, with Rev. Howard Jones, pastor, in charge. Burial will be in the Wellington Cemetery. The Kelso Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Montague was born in Fairfax, Vermont, February 22, 1877, but most of his life had been spent in Texas. He and Mrs. Montague were married at Cleburne August 12, 1900. Forty-one years ago, they came to Wellington, and continued to make this their home. At the time he went on leave from the postal department, he had been carrying the mail longer than any other carrier in the county.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the W.O. W. and Odd Fellows Lodges.

Mr. Montague is survived by his widow, Mrs. Annie Montague of Wellington; four daughters and a son, Mrs. B.A. Bledsoe, Mrs. Otis Ball, Mrs. Hubert Leach and R.S. Montague, Jr., of Wellington and Mrs. Gerald Hardy. A number of grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive.
