Officers went to the home of Cpl. Kent Alan Alridge at 10:30 a.m. after Alridge didn't report for duty, Winston-Salem police said in a statement.
Alridge, 44, of 5330 Alamo Drive joined the Winston-Salem Police Department in November 1988 after working two years as city firefighter, the police said.
Alridge's body was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for an autopsy. The police department is investigating the circumstances that led to his death.
As a police officer, Alridge worked in the department's field-services bureau and criminal-investigations division.

Mr. Kent Alan Alridge, 44, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, March 8, 2010 at his home. He was born August 21, 1965 in Forsyth County to Stokes Henry Alridge, Jr. and Mildred "Bonnie" Atwood Alridge. Mr. Alridge was of the Methodist faith. He was employed by the Winston-Salem Police Department with 22 years of service. He also worked with the fire department for a couple of years before becoming a Winston-Salem police officer. He loved team roping, hunting, fishing and softball. He was also a coach at Southwest Little League. Mr. Alridge was a loving son, father and friend to all. He was preceded in death by his mother. Surviving are two daughters, Salina Alridge of East Bend and Rachel Alridge of Winston-Salem; his father, Stokes Alridge of Winston-Salem; his fiancee, Melissa Adams of Clemmons; and one sister, Donna Maitz and husband John of London, England. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 12, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
