By 1870, George and his younger brother John were orphans living with their uncle Henry Bremer, a grocer in Wilmington.
As a teenager George traveled to Manhattan, New York, where he was listed in the 1880 census as a "confectioner" and may have been apprenticed to a pastry chef. But by 1885 he had returned to the South. He married his first wife, Minnie Frances Mason, on 28 June 1885 in Augusta, Georgia. Together they were the parents of three sons: Perry Robinson (1886-1963), Henry Clarence (1888-1889) and George N. Jr. (1890-1950).
The 1900 census shows George Bremer Sr. living with his wife and two boys in Atlanta and working as a bartender. George and his first wife parted about 1905.
George Bremer Sr. married his second wife, Nell Estelle "Nellie" Durdin, on 15 September 1907 at Grace M.E. Church in Atlanta. Together they were the parents of three children: Clara Estelle (1908-1977), William Norman (1911-1975) and Sarah (1915-1919).
In the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census we find George Bremer Sr. employed as a City Fireman for the City of Atlanta.
His funeral notice in the Atlanta Constitution, 25 October 1930, p.24, stated that rites would be held at the English Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. He had been a member of the fire department for 22 years, and was stationed at No. 14 engine house at the time of his death.
