Little Everett "Jr." was the son of Everett O. & Christine Leeak Farnum.Though he was born in his Dads hometown of Millington,he lived with his parents in Detroit. On Jan 1,1923 his baby sister Maxine was born and it is passed down that he was very happy with her. Just 2 months later on March 5, 1923 his MAMA died following surgery from childbirth complications. PAPA took MAMA to Millington to be buried with his family.Little Everett stayed there with his Grandparents, Otis & Lottie Farnum and PAPA returned to Detroit to work.In 1923 there were not a lot of optons for a widowed man to work full time and care for 2 very young children. The baby sister was being cared for by Christine's married brother Mark in Detroit.Little Everett remained in Millington until about Nov., with frequent visits from PAPA.Then the fall of 1923 his Aunt Kate(Christine's sister)came and took him to St. Louis Missouri to live with his Uncle Mark & Aunt Genevieve Leeak. In July 1924, he and his sister were both adopted by their Uncle & Aunt,it broke PAPA'S heart but he knew what he was doing was for their best. The children were now told that PAPA was Uncle Everett and he visited and kept contact till his death in 1971. The adoption lead to little Everett's name legally changed to Mark Everett Leeak Jr.and continued to be called Jr.; his sisters name remained Maxine, just her last name changed. In April 1928 while Jr. was in 2nd grade ,he came down with Diptheria and died 6 days later. It took a lot of effort on several peoples parts to finally locate where his resting place was until March 2010. In May 2010, his much younger half brother & sister saw to having a marker placed on his grave, honoring both his birth given & adopted names .
