Miner grew up in Dover Center (now Westlake), Ohio where he had his only year of formal education. The Miner family arrived in the Kingsvile, Ontario area in 1878. Here Miner's embarked on a career as a market farmer and hunting guide to supplement the family's income from brick making.
Miner married in 1888. The first two children from the marriage died young and Miner subsequently became active in a local church. At age 33 the boys in Miner's Sunday school class taught him to read. The Miners later had three sons who grew into adulthood.
In response to diminishing numbers of migratory fowl, Miner established a bird sanctuary on his property in the early 1900s. To track the migration patterns of the birds, Miner banded in total over 90,000 wild birds. Each band included an address to send it to when recovered along with a Bible verse.
Beginning in the 1920s Miner embarked on a career as a lecturer and hosted radio programs he hosted from his home. In 1943, Miner was knighted for his achievement in conservation.
