WAYNESBORO -- Thomas Garland Hawpe, 69, of 128 Crompton Road, died Wednesday morning (Feb. 27, 1980) at the University of Virginia Hospital.
He was born in Augusta County near Spottswood on Jan. 5, 1911, a son of William S. and Margaret (Miller) Hawpe.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was elected a deacon in 1951 and an elder in 1973. He was a member of Lee Lodge 209 AF and AM and was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Lynchburg Scottish Rite Bodies. He had been associated with McClure Printing Co. Inc. for a number of years.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Anne (Dunlap) Hawpe; three sons, Thomas G. Jr. of Greenville, S.C., William C. of Marshall Islands, and Edward C. Hawpe of Milford, Del.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Boone McClure of Rt. 1, Greenville, and Mrs. Katherine H. Brooks of Staunton; five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery by Dr. J. Whitner Kennedy.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Waynesboro Heart Fund, care of Mrs. Walter L. Glenn of Rt. 2, Waynesboro, Va., 22980 or to the Waynesboro First Aid Crew, 201 W. Broad St., Waynesboro, Va., 22980.
