Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1853 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the 5th United States Regular Infantry at the start of the Civil War. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers, and was assigned as the Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the Army of the Potomac. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers and Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He retired from the Army with the rank of Colonel in 1896.
