"Fritz" was raised in Sheboygan, graduated from the University of Wisconsin and worked for General Electric before serving in World War II as an Army intelligence officer, analyzing the order of battle of the German Army and helping the British at Bletchley Park, in their project to break the German "enigma" code. After the War, Fritz joined the newly created CIA as one of its charter members. Throughout the Cold War, he worked to analyze and interpret intelligence gathered with regard to the Soviet Union.
Fritz was a voracious reader. He was known for his dry sense of humor and wit. He enjoyed traveling through the Western states and studying their geology. Hobbies included stamp collecting and photography, and in the mid-1950's he bought a 1939 Mercedes 540K that he worked on for several years.
Fritz married Amy Mellis Chisholm Feb 14, 1942 at Madison, Wisconsin. They lived in Fairfax and Arlington, Virginia and raised three children. Amy has (in 2014) eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
