PLAN CHURCH RITES FOR W. C. MURPHY, 51, PRESS AID FOR G. O. P.

Deceased Name: William C. Murphy Jr.

Washington, Nov. 27 [Special] -- Services will be held Tuesday in St. Ann's Catholic church here for William C. Murphy Jr., 51, publicity director for the Republican national committee since 1945, who died in his sleep early today in his home. Burial will be in Arlington National cemetery.

Murphy had been in apparent good health. He worked Friday at the committee headquarters and played golf yesterday. He began a newspaper career in 1920 and was Washington bureau chief of the Philadelphia Inquirer from 1937 to 1945.

He directed the Republican publicity campaign for the congressional elections of 1946 in which the G.O.P. scored its first national victory since the advent of the Roosevelt New Deal in 1933. He was president of the National Press club in 1934 and was a member of the Gridiron club. Murphy, born in Crawfordsville, Ind., is survived by his widow, Maybelle Margaret; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane Fraser, and a son, William Gainer, a student at Wabash college.
