Cassie M. Howk was the daughter of Albert M. Howk (1863 - 1922) who married Lettie Florence Sheldon (1867 - 1950) of Wellington, Ohio. She was the grand-daughter of James Sheldon and Adeline West, who after their marriage, settled in Wellington in the 1850's. This Sheldon family was prominent in the production of Cheese, for which Wellington is known. Wellington is also known as the home of Archibald MacNeal Willard who painted the famous "Spirit of '76" and who is also interred in the Greenwood Cemetery.

She married Ralph Daniel Rowland (1884 - 1968) on October 2, 1905, and they had three children, Albert Charles, Sheldon Lee, and Eva M. During her life time, and among her many activities, she was matron of the Alpha Gamma house at Ohio University in Athens in 1933 and 1934.

Our family has a few photograph "jems" in our archives, once stuffed away in a box with unidentified people, Roberta "Bobbie" (Mains) Whitbeck (1916 - 2004) of Battle Creek, Michigan, was located in 1999. She was a first cousin to our father, and also second cousin to Cassie Howk and Mabel Manning. Bobbie remembered having taken a trip with her mother to visit cousins in Wellington, Ohio, in the early 1920's, when our "Ohio Girls" photograph was taken, and she was able to identify herself and her mother but was uncertain as to the other individuals. Bobbie is seated in the front holding the puppy, and her mother Edith (Sheldon) Mains (1896 - 1967) is standing center wearing the dark sweater. The location being Wellington, Ohio, led our research to Lorain County in the 1990's and where the main focus of our research has remained.

Through researching Cassie's son, Sheldon Lee Rowland (1909 - 1994), his son living in Phoenix, Arizona, was located. With his help, we have since positively identified 2 more of the 10 women, including Cassie (standing second from the right) and her daughter Eva M. (seated second from left).
