Thomas Jefferson Lewis was born in Independence County, Arkansas 9/3/1861, near Cave City. He was the son of William R. Lewis of Indiana, who moved to Mississippi and later to Arkansas. His mother was Sarah M. Green Lewis, originally of Alabama and later Arkansas. He was one of ten children. T. J. Lewis married Mary Isabelle Brewer September 16, 1885 at Cave City, Arkansas.

In 1901, believing that Texas would be a better place to raine their children, they began to make arrangements to move. On August 19, that year, they took their eight living children and left Arkansas in two wagons. In nineteen days, they arrived at Chisholm, TX. The first year in Texas was spent farming on the shares. They lived in Rockwall County for four years before moving to Collingsworth County in 1905. The bought part of the Bromley Ranch, which had a house and barns. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis helped organize a non-denominational church, which later became the Kelley Methodist Church.

T. J. Lewis died February 5, 1931, age 69.

There children were: Arthur Talmadge Lewis, Naomi Dell Lewis Kesler, Sarah S. Lewis Camp, Grace Isabelle Lewis Camp, Rosa Lewis Ingle, George Robert Lewis, William Claude Lewis and Eunice Thelma Lewis McWhorter. One son, Allison, died at age nine in Arkansas.
