Dennis R. "Pete" Toon was born June 8, 1926, the 4th child born to Lee E. & Bernice (Scott) Toon in the house where his grandfather, J.W. Toon II had lived since 1900. Pete's father & grandfather were farmers & when Pete was older, he helped work the farm. His mother taught school, most of the time at Liberty Grove. Pete started school at Liberty Grove when he was five years of age and always made "A"s. During World War II, he served in the U.S.Army (Asian Theater). After he came home from the war, he married Joyce Fay Dixon, daughter of Lee & Odessa (Ward) Dixon. He attended Paris Jr. College, then started his 33 year career as a Texas State Trooper. His duties included guarding Presidents Kennedy, Johnson & Nixon. He was driving the fifth car in the motorcade in Dallas when President John Kennedy was assassinated. Pete & Joyce were parents of one son & two daughters.
