OBITUARY

"The Funeral of a Pioneer"

The funeral of the late Mary E. Clark took place Wednesday afternoon from the late residence, 50 Center Street, proceeding to the Methodist church where the services were held by the Pastor, Rev. A.F. Hasse, who preached an appropriate sermon. The funeral was largely attended. Members of Ursula Parlor #1 N.D.G.W. turned out in a body to pay their last respects to an old pioneer and the Native Sons and Pioneers were represented. Internment was made in the City Cemetery beside the grave of her husband, Thomas S. Clark, who died in 1882.

Mary E. Clark, whose death occurred Monday was born December 29, 1829 in New York. She was married to Thomas S. Clark in 1849 in the State of Illinois. They crossed the plains in 1852 and settled in Jackson. Mrs. Clark has the distinction of being the third white woman who came to our community and at the time of her death whe was the oldest settler in Amador County.

Thomas S. Clark, her husband, passed to his reward on December 20, 1882. Since then the deceased had been living with her son, Charles Clark.

Mrs. Clark was a devoted Christian woman; she was converted at the age of 17 and joined the Methodist Church. She remained a faithful member up to the time of her decease. Her devotion to her family was exemplary. No hour of the day found her unemployed and up to the very day of her last illness, she was doing what her hands could find to do, that she might render a faithful account of her stewardship. Her children rise up and call her blessed, knowing that it was for them that she lived and labored.

She died a triumphant death, resting secure on the promises of God, Monday July 27 at the ripe age of 84 years. There remain to mourn her loss seven children, Oliver Clark of Sacramento, Freeman and Thomas of Nevada, Charles Edward.
Mrs. Lydia Pense, Sherman G. and Mrs. Mary Kelly of Jackson. Two children died in infancy and the late Harvey Clark, also of Jackson, passed away during the present year.
