Mary Jane Abel, 79, 1537 N. Wabash St., died at 11:35 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, at Wabash Skilled CareCenter. She was born on May 19, 1926, in Terre Haute, to William and Anne E.(Scott) Duzan. She married the Rev. David L. Abel on July 24, 1949, in Terre Haute. He survives.
She was a beloved wife and parsonage mate of Methodist churches, along with her husband, at Hume-Metcalf, Brocton Circuit, and Hammond, Ill., and in Indiana at Loogootee, Bloomfield, Indianapolis, Shelby Street and Immanual, and at United Methodist churches at Delphi, Warsaw Trinity, Hammond Christ, Yorktown, Waterloo and retired from Portland Asbury. After retirement, they served Young America Center and Popular Grove (Howard County) and in Wabash County at Bethel, Salem, Lebanon and Wabash Church of Our Saviour. The Abels went with the United Methodist tour to the Orient, and led tours to South America, the Holy Land, Europe and Scandinavia. Mrs. Abel served some congregations as secretary and was active in the WSCS and United Methodist Women. She also enjoyed making and painting ceramics, flowers, gardening, knitting and sewing. She especially enjoyed her family.
Also surviving are two sons, David (Marcia Gienapp) Abel II, Valparaiso, and Frederick Abel, Irvine, Calif.; a daughter, Ruth (Terry) Canfield, Akron; four grandsons, Christian Abel, Streamwood, Ill., Dan Abel, Valparaiso, Josh Canfield and Nate Canfield, both of Akron; and a granddaughter, Katie Abel, Valparaiso. She was preceded in death by three sisters.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Manchester Avenue Chapel. The Rev. Terry Canfield, Gerald Hewson and Pastor Earl Guingrich will officiate. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Preferred memorials are to Wabash Church of Our Saviour United Methodist or the Wabash-Miami Home Health Care & Hospice.
