Dr. Henry W. Pons, 76, of 1 Pine Tree Road, Lock Haven, a well-known research chemist and avid bike rider, died at 6 a.m. today at the Ephrata Community Hospital after suffering injuries when his bike hit the side of a van shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday in Earl Township. According to the Reading Times, Pons was biking down a steep hill with a friend, when he failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a van driven by Melvin R. Kurtz, 37, of New Holland RD 1. Pons was thrown from his bike in the crash. Dr. Robert Suermann pronounced Pons dead from massive head injuries at 6 a.m. this morning. Born in Frieburg, West Germany on Nov. 25 1908, he was the son of the late Hans and Alice Goldschmidt.
