Levi was the first child born to John and Rachel Chaney. He grew up on his father's farm in Highland County, Ohio with his younger siblings, Henry, Eliza, William, and Edgar. In April of 1861 he enlisted in the 12th Ohio Regiment, Company K, and he was mustered out in July of 1861. In November of 1861 he enlisted in the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company D, and he was mustered out in November of 1862. In June of 1863 he enlisted in the 24th Ohio Independent Battery, Light Artillery, and he was mustered out in June of 1865. Two years after the end of his civil war service he married Nancy J. Hedges in Bath County, Kentucky, and moved back to Highland County, Ohio. They had three children, Harrison, Emma, and Emerson. The family moved to Fleming County, Kentucky where they farmed. In about 1881 Nancy died. Levi remarried in about 1882 to a woman named Joann. They had two sons, Willie and Joseph. Levi then moved to Bath County, Kentucky, and started working in the livery business. His second wife died between 1900 and 1910. Levi lived to the great age of ninety-two.
