Dora Elizabeth Franks Phillips is the daughter of Jesse Rufus and Arminda "Ella" Homer Franks. She has 5 brothers and 3 sisters that lived to be adults. She was born and raised in Marion County, AL.

She married George "Willis" Phillips on April 10, 1912 in Marion County, AL by J. Conner, two days after her 17th birthday. They moved to Winston County to be near Willis' parents.

Dora didn't like being away from her family and went back to Marion County and Willis followed. There they had 12 children with nine living to be adults. In 1916 Dora had a stillborn infant daughter. In 1919 her first born daughter, Gennie Mae died from burns from a fireplace. In 1924 she had a son, John Franklin die less than a month after birth. The remaining 9 children were raised to be warm, loving, respectful and responsible adults. She lost one son, Thomas Leonard in 1945 who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country in World War II.

Not only did she care for her children and home, but also tended the huge garden and canned many vegetables for winter. She hauled water from the spring to the house for drinking, cooking, cleaning and laundry. She cooked the meals on a wood burning stove. She loved her cow. When she milked it, Dora would, ever so gently, talk to her the same way she talked to her children and grandchildren.

Life got easier in the 1950's. An electric stove and an electric wringer washing machine were bought. She still loved cooking on the old wood burning stove. After her husband Willis died in 1957, she loved to spent the afternoons watching the soap opera's on the black and white television.

In her later years, her sister Nancy Jane Franks moved into her home and also her youngest son moved back home. She passed away peacefully and suddenly of a heart attack at her home in the Pea Ridge Community, rural Guin, Marion County, Alabama. Dora is still missed today by all who knew her.

Please Note: The USSS Death Index list her birth year as 1896. This is an error. All of the family members bibles list her birth year as 1895 as does her headstone. I was told by her and her children that she was two months older than her husband, George Willis Phillips who was born in 1895 also.
Bio is by her granddaughter Martha Franks Phillips Martin.
