Arriving in Vietnam, Russell was assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, USARV.
Russell was squad leader when he was killed in the early morning hours, at the very beginning of the TET offensive. Russell was ambushed by enemy small arms fire from an AK47 at roughly the intersection of highways 15 and 36 in the village of Ho Nai near Long Binh.
Survived by his parents, Stanley Leroy and Clara India Amoss of Maryland.
