Fashion Designer. Born in London, England, his aspirations to become a designer emerged at an early age. As a teenager he created outfits for his sisters and at 16 he dropped out of school to pursue a career in fashion designing. His first entry in the fashion world was with the tailors Anderson and Sheppard. A year later McQueen travelled to Milan where he was employed as designer Romeo Gigli's assistant. Returning to London, he applied for the post of a teacher at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design; instead, he was persuaded to join as a student. McQueen followed the advice, and after graduation his first portfolio was bought by magazine editor and international style icon Isabella Blow, who became his mentor and close friend. In 1996, he began his own fashion label and was selected as Britain's "Designer of the Year". This led to a contract with Givenchy as the chief designer, but due to creative differences they soon parted ways. In 2000 he joined Gucci as a fashion director. For his efforts he won the "Designer of the Year" award three more times. He was also awarded a CBE (Commander of The British Empire) and an "International Fashion Designer of the Year" award. By the end of 2007, he had boutiques in London, Milian, New York, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Celebrities such as Madonna, Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker and Rihanna have been photographed wearing his designs. His collections include women's and men's ready-to-wear, accessories, eyewear and fragrance (Kingdom 2003 and MyQueen 2005). To date, Alexander McQueen collections are distributed in over 39 countries. McQueen was found dead in his London home from an apparent suicide. He had been distraught over the death of his mother nine days earlier, and was haunted by Isabella Blow's suicide in 2007.
