Vernon Harrington Whipple was the son of Charles Martin Whipple and Ella Vernon Harrington. His maternal grandparents were William Shaw Harrington and Elizabeth Clark. The parents of William Shaw Harrington were James Harrington and Charlotte Walrod.

Vernon attended the Colorado School of Mines for 3 years. On 21 April 1909 he married Louise Bosley Lyman, in Chicago. Louise was the daughter of John and Lena Lang Lyman.

Vernon was the originator of the "Foreman's Club" while he was Industrial Secretary at the Dayton, Ohio, Y.M.C.A. He later moved to Bellarie, Ohio, as General Secretary of the Y. During the depression he bought a farm near Lebanon, Ohio and commuted to the Armco Steel Company, in Middletown, Ohio, where he worked in the Industrial Engineering Department. He was active in Boy Scouts, receiving the Silver Beaver award for his adult leadership in the Boy Scout Lebanon Council. Vernon was a 32 Degree Mason.
