Bernice I. Welch, 80, of 25 First St., Mill Hall, died Oct. 2, 2008 in Susque-View, surrounded by her family and loved ones. Born Dec. 21, 1927 in Salona, she was a daughter of the late Edward F. and Rose Shope Washburn. She was later adopted by Ed and Ida Mincer. Her husband, Philip M. Welch, predeceased her. A 1945 graduate of the former Mill Hall High School, she graduated from Lock Haven Hospital School in 1948 and was a registered nurse. Bernie worked at Sylvania after school and then enrolled at Lock Haven Hospital in the cadet program to receive her nursing degree. She worked at Lock Haven Hospital for 40 years until her retirement. She loved to travel, go shopping and do embroidery until her health declined. Bernie was very active doing projects at the high school as an alumnus. She had a Yorkie "Bandit" who was always by her side. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spent many hours helping take care of them and playing with them. She was affectionately referred to, by them, as "GG," which meant great-grandmother. She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis (Craig) Slaterbeck of Lock Haven; a son, James E. (Barbara) Welch of Jersey Shore; three brothers, Arthur (Mabel) Mayes of Dover, Del., Paul (Josephine) Mayes of Flemington and Willard (Mary) Mayes of Lock Haven; three sisters, Minnie Mann of Beech Creek, Cheryl (Melvin) McCombs of Mill Hall and Deanna (Frank) Ball of Flemington; seven grandchildren, Amy Fritz, Zane, (Kelly) and Zachary (Amber) Slaterbeck; Jason, Jaime and Jared Welch; five great-grandchildren, Estee and Colt Fritz, Logan and Ryan Slaterbeck and Gabriel; a special niece, Kami Long and her husband Ron; a nephew Cory; and other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, John E. Washburn, and a sister, Winifred Mayes. Services will be Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 at 10 a.m. in the Dean K. Wetzler Jr. Funeral Home, Mill Hall. Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lock Haven. Memorial contributions may be made to Susque-View Home Inc., 22 Cree Dr., Lock Haven, PA 17745. Arrangements entrusted to the Dean K. Wetzler Jr. Funeral Home, 320 Main St., Mill Hall, PA 17751.
