Clifford was born and raised in Santa Anna, TX and attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX where he received and football and track scholarship. He pursued his business career in Dallas, Tx where he met and married Lillian V. Nabors in 1938. He went to the military in 1942. He joined the Army Air Corps and served in Europe and was promoted to Lt. He came home in 1946. He pursued a career with the Southland Corp and 7-11 food stores where he became President from 1954 to 1962. At this time he was appointed to the Board of Directors of Southland Corp in charge of new area development for 7-11 food stores. He and Lillian retired on the Diamond W ranch that he bought in 1961 and lived there until his death in 2008. Lillian passed away in 2001. He and Lillian had 3 children, Dorethea Wheeler Glass, Clifford Ward Wheeler, Jr, and James Austin Wheeler. They all live in Texas at the current time.
