BARBARA K. APEL, 101, died Oct. 27 at Central Kansas Medical Center Long Term Care of Ellinwood.
She was born Feb. 27, 1901, at St. Sebastian, Ohio, the daughter of Mathias and Agnes Schaefer Heyne. She married Mathias Apel on Sept. 27, 1921, at Ellinwood. He died Sept. 8, 1978. A resident of Barton County for more than 70 years and a resident of Augusta for more than 20 years, she was a farm wife and gardener. Mrs. Apel was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Ellinwood, St. James Catholic Church of Augusta, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella.
Survivors include two sons, Norman J. Apel of Great Bend and Harry C. Apel of Augusta; three daughters, Sally (Sylvestra B.) Sigley of Augusta, Theresa A. Wornkey of Wyandotte, Okla., and Mary Jean (Jeanie) Miller of Great Bend; three sisters, Clara Whitney of Irving, Texas, Monica Robl of Ellinwood and Alfredia Miller of Kinsley; 23 grandchildren; many step grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; numerous step great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two infant sons; three brothers, Philip, Ferdanand and Philip; three sisters, Rosa Kramp, Sister Caroline Heyne and Margaret Knorr; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Altar Society rosary, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, both at Kimple Funeral Home of Ellinwood. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Ellinwood with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Commanche District Cemetery of Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph's School Endowment Fund or St. James Building Fund, both in care of the funeral home.
