The Columbus Enquirer-Sun
Columbus, Georgia
Issue of July 28 1909

Yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock Mr. Samuel Newton Boggs passed away at his home, 502 Fourteenth street after an illness of about two months of general debility.

The deceased has been in ill health for almost a year, and his death did not come as a great surprise to the immediate members of the family. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him the news of his death being received with regret in many homes in the section of the city in which he lived. He was a Confederate veteran and served in the army of northern Virginia with distinction.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. R. Clegg and Miss Bettie Boggs, and one son, Mr. Jesse G. Boggs, all of Columbus.

The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence, the services being conducted by the Rev. Mr. Granberry. Interment will be in Riverdale cemetery.

Linda Ames' photos of the lot are lovely - except that they are of the wrong lot. They show the lot for the family Jesse G. BOGGS family and his wife's family, the KNIGHTONs (Lot 40 in Section 7). The entry in the Sexton's card file for Sam shows:

Samuel BOGGS, male, died aged 67 years of dysentery at 502 Fourteenth Street, Columbus, Ga.; interred 7-27-1909 in the east half of Lot 43 in Section 7.

Also buried in this lot are his wife Ann (PATE) BOGGS, as well as six-month-old Louie Jasper CLEGG, evidently their grandson. I would add photos here of the lot where Sam and Ann are buried, but there is no room for additional photos on this memorial. I did post some on the memorials for Ann and Louie. I expect that Sam will have a marker on his grave in two or three months, as I will be sending off an application for one from the Veterans Administration shortly.
