Wilhelm was born in Amelsen, Hanover and served in the Bavarian Army before leaving for America with his wife and three children in 1847. Five other children had died young before leaving Germany. The family settled on 80 acres of land they bought near Howards Grove, Wis at the SW corner of what's now Wis Rte 32 and Playbird Road. They cleared the forest, built a log cabin and began raising grain. By 1850 they had established their farm and hired a worker named William Neubauer, also from Hanover. A cholera epidemic, believed to have been brought in by newer immigrants, wiped out the family in 1852 except for ten-year-old Henry, who became a ward of the nearby Schlichting family, married Anna Otten in 1865, and ran a dry goods store in Sheboygan until his death in 1893.
