Byron was drafted into the US Army.
Upon arriving in Vietnam 22 November 1970, Byron was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, USARV. Byron was passenger aboard a military vehicle approximately 12 kilometers west of Gia Ray Airfield in Long Khanh Province, when A Company was engaged by hostile forces. Byron died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body
when a hostile rocket propelled grenade hit the military vehicle that he was riding in.
Survived by his wife, Rosemary V Bangert of 1307 Saint Joseph Avenue, Albert Lea and his parents; Arthur G and Helen M Beyer Bangert of Route #2, Albert Lea, Minnesota.
