Edward J. Hayes of West Chester

Edward J. Hayes, 80, of West Chester, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at the Coatesville Veterans' Hospital.
He was married, for more than 50 years, to Jane Hickman Hayes.
Born May 13, 1924, in West Chester, he was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Church and worked as a finance officer for Radnor Township for 10 years.
He was a 1942 graduate of St. Agnes High School. He attended Villanova University and received a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific.
He was an auditor for the Department of the U.S. Army for more than 25 years, where he received commendations for programs at Ft. Lee, Va., Ft. Dix, N.J., Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind., and Rock Island, Ill.
He was chief of Internal Affairs, Office of Comptroller at Valley Forge Military Hospital, until its closure.
He coached the East Side and Great Valley Little Leagues and also the West Chester American Legion baseball teams.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1333 of West Chester, the American Legion, VFW Post 106, the Marine Corps League, the Municipal Finance Officer Association and was a former member of the West Chester Golf and Country Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, T. Edward Hayes of West Chester and William J. Hayes of Chalfont; four daughters, Kathleen Horner of Media, Linda Hendricks of West Chester, Carole Gehring of Towanda, and Nancy Petrillo of Arizona; a sister, Eleanor McNamara of Carlsbad, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William C. Hayes; and a sister, Mary Dooley.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, 1325 Boot Road, West Chester, where family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.
