Herbert W. "Buster" Ray, 96, of Altus, passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at English Village Nursing Home. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday at Kincannon Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Margie VanOostrum officiating. Burial will take place in the Garden of Memories in Salinas, Calif.

Herbert Woodrow Ray was born Aug. 13, 1913, in Altus to Clyde and Ella (Howerton) Ray. He attended school in Altus. He was a member of the Methodist Church, he also belonged to the Elks Lodge. He served his country in the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

He married Evelyn Hunter on June 29, 1947, in Vernon, Texas. She preceded him in death in April 1973. He married Reba Caster in July 19, 1983, in Tulsa.

He worked as a salesman at Wickenden's Men's Store in Salinas for 20 years. He moved back to Altus in the mid seventies and built houses until he retired. He loved to fish at Lake Nacimiento in California. He was quite the craftsman and was always in the garage working with wood. He created the most beautiful detailed living room tables for his wife, Evelyn in the 60s.

He also had quite a gift for landscaping. Whether in California or Altus, his yard was always perfectly manicured on all sides. He had quite an eye for detail. He was always immaculately dressed. He continued this love for detail in his homes and usually had some sort of project going. He had just finished laying tiles in the dining room (at age 93) when he fell in December 2006. This fall led to his current residence at English Village Manor.

He enjoyed golf and maintained his membership at the Elk's Lodge. He built quite a few golf cart sheds in the mid 70s that are still in use today.

He was preceded in death by his father; mother; his first wife, Evelyn; and a younger brother, Lynn. He is survived by his wife Reba Ray of Altus; daughter, Debbie Johnston and husband Keith of Lindsay; step-daughter, Beth Roth and husband Mike of Henderson, Nev; sister, Kathryn Milton of Oklahoma City; brother, Bill Ray of Altus; three grandchildren, George Cecil and wife Chris of Union City, Anissa Clingman, and Tisha Auld and husband Daryl all of Lindsay; six grandchildren, Shelly Montsabias, Kristi Kimbley and husband Sean, Kortni Silva and husband Anthony, Jason Roth and wife Jennifer, Jennifer Langberg and husband Richard, and Jill Roth; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
