"Lt. Col Roy Connell Thompson, II age 72, of Villa Rica, Georgia passed away December 8, 2009 at Vista Care Hospice at Wesley Woods. ~
He was born May 10, 1937 in Bismarck, North Dakota, the son of the late Mr. Walter Macomber Thompson and the late Mrs. Dorothy Hiland Thompson. ~
Lt. Col. Thompson was a graduate of the University of North Dakota and received his Masters degree from Central Michigan University. ~
He was a twenty-year veteran of the United States Air Force. Roy was with the Military Air Force Command Travis AFB, California for 10 years flying men and materials out of Viet Nam, Tactical Airlift Command, Pleiku AB, Viet Nam, Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, 89th Military Wing ferrying the Vice President and VIP's in their journeys (junkets) - stateside and worldwide, 58th Squadron, Ramstein Air Base in Germany as Director of Operations - Roy ferried world leaders worldwide. ~
In 1980, Lt. Col. Thompson took a job in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as executive flight captain for HRH Prince Talal bin Abdul Aziz al Saud. As U.N. Secretary General for UNICEF, the Prince called on the governments of wealthy nations for contributions, then visited underprivileged countries to disperse the funds. He joined Flight Safety International as director of standards, where Roy was a simulator instructor training some 3500 pilots from corporations that purchased Gulfstream Aircraft. His civic and social contributions were many, having received the Kiwanis George E. Hixon Award in 2007, the Kiwanian of the Year Award in 2004 and 2005, President of the Kiwanis Club of Fairfield Plantation 2004 and 2005, and Eagle Scout Boy Scout. Lt. Col. Thompson was a member of the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Carroll County and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Carrollton, Georgia. ~
He is survived by his wife; daughter, ...; son and daughter-in-law, .... ~
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11:00 am from the Chapel of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Carrollton with Dr. Jimmy Gentry officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be .... ~
Interment services will be conducted Monday, December 14, 2009 at 11:30 AM from the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton with full military honors provided by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. ~
The family will receive friends Friday, December 11, 2009 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Jones-Wynn Funeral Home, Villa Rica Chapel. ~
