Mary was the daughter of James M. Loving and Eliza Harlow, and the 2nd wife of George Washington Higginbotham, Jr. She was often listed as Frances in censuses and vital records, possibly because George's first wife was named Mary Elizabeth (she died in 1857).

Mary and George Jr. married in 1859, and to their union were born three known children: Eliza Jane, David A., and Cora E. Plus, she was step-mother to his five young children by his first wife: James L., George W., John Early, Patrick Henry, and Luther H.

Stepson George and his wife (nee Dorothy Anne Wood) preceded Mary in death (Dorothy in 1881, George in 1883), so it's likely that she and George Jr. took care of their two young orphaned children: Mary Eliza and John. Then George Jr. died in 1887, followed a week later by their daughter Eliza (age 25, Single), and stepson John in 1888 (age 38, Married with children). Surviving her death were son David, daughter Cora, stepsons Luther and Patrick, and many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Mary is just one of the thousands of remarkable women who endured through local epidemics, the Civil War, laws that prevented them from owning property and voting, deaths of their loved ones, and maybe even lived through one or both World Wars and a global pandemic. They show how blessed women are in the 21st century!
