William E. "Tony" Doherty, age 79, of 391 West Lake Rd., Hammondsport, NY, died Sunday, May 5, 1996 after a short illness. He was born January 22, 1917, the son of William E. and Gladys (Champlin) Doherty. Tony was a WWII Air Force pilot for Canada and later for the U.S. and after the war became active in promoting soaring at Harris Hill, Elmira, NY. He was former vice president and wine maker at the Pleasant Valley Wine Co. and worked as sales manager at Schweizer Aircraft from 1959-1980. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for Glenn H. Curtiss Museum and for a time served as executive director of the museum. He was a member of the Bath Country Club. He graduated from Ridley College, Canada, and attended Cornell University, studying wine chemistry and architecture. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Underhill) Doherty of Hammondsport; son Trafford and wife, Jean Doherty; daughter, Jacqueline Anne Doherty; two brothers, Duane Doherty and Peter Doherty; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Christopher and Brian Doherty and former wife, Jacqueline (Leigh-Mallory) Doherty of Horseheads, NY.
