She was a descendant of Lt. Daniel Shelton, an early settler of Stratford, Connecticut and an ardent Anglican. He was married to the granddaughter of Gov. Thomas Welles of Hartford and Wethersfield. Sarah was born in Monroe, Connecticut and died in Orange, Connecticut. Every vital record date is disputable but her identity is positively made through the tragic deaths of her two nieces who were visiting her during the 1859 diphtheria epidemic in Orange. After she died the rest of her family left for Smith County, Kansas.
